01Coverage & Methodology

Every figure traces back to a filed document.

ESGAUGE is not a ratings agency and does not sell a score. We read what companies actually disclose across the United States, Canada, and Europe, code it to a fixed schema, and report the disclosure rate alongside the value.

The Universe

Three markets, index by index.

United States, Canada, and Europe — Russell 3000, S&P 500, S&P/TSX Composite, S&P Europe 350, EURO STOXX, and FTSE constituents.

United States

The deepest and longest-running coverage. Every library is populated for the U.S. market, drawn from SEC filings — proxy statements, 10-Ks, 8-Ks, and sustainability reporting.

Russell 3000
≈3,000
S&P 500
500
  • Primary source: SEC EDGAR filings (DEF 14A, 10-K, 8-K)
  • Segmented by 11 GICS business sectors and 14 company size groups
  • Say-on-pay, SEC no-action correspondence, and N-PX voting records

Canada

Canadian issuers tracked on the same schema as the U.S., so a provision compares like for like across the border — the basis for our cross-border say-on-pay and governance work.

S&P/TSX Composite
≈225
  • Primary source: SEDAR+ management information circulars and annual filings
  • Comparable compensation and board-composition fields to the U.S. libraries
  • Underpins published Canada/U.S. say-on-pay trend reviews

Europe

European and UK issuers, with disclosure read from annual reports, remuneration reports, and sustainability statements. Reporting conventions differ by market, so fields are mapped rather than assumed equivalent.

S&P Europe 350
350
EURO STOXX
Eurozone large cap
FTSE
UK listed
  • Primary source: annual reports, remuneration reports, and sustainability statements
  • UK-only statutory gender pay-gap reporting captured separately
  • Framework adherence tracked for GRI, SASB, TCFD, CDP, and the <IR> Framework

How the Data Is Produced

Four steps, in order.

01

Sourced from public disclosure

Every figure originates in a filed document — proxy statements, 10-Ks, 8-Ks, sustainability and CSR reports. We do not model, estimate, or score.

02

Read and coded to a fixed schema

Each data point maps to a defined field in a versioned library, so the same provision is captured the same way across thousands of issuers and across years.

03

Reviewed by analysts

Extraction is assisted by machine reading, but our analysts review and reconcile the output before it enters a library. Disclosure rates are reported alongside every metric, so gaps stay visible.

04

Delivered as a help desk, not a subscription

You ask an empirical question; we return the dataset, cut to your peer group, sector, or size band. Custom studies, recurring extracts, and dashboards all draw on the same libraries.

Sources

Read from the primary record.

Nothing enters a library from a secondary aggregator. Each data point is coded from the document in which the company made the statement.

  • DEF 14A proxy statementsUS

Compensation tables, CD&A, governance provisions, and shareholder engagement disclosure.

  • 10-K annual reportsUS

Risk factors, human capital disclosure, and climate-related statements.

  • 8-K current reportsUS

Director and officer changes, plan amendments, and succession announcements.

  • Management information circularsCanada

Compensation and board-composition disclosure filed on SEDAR+.

  • Annual and remuneration reportsEurope

European and UK pay, board, and governance disclosure.

  • Sustainability and CSR reportsAll

Emissions, energy, water, waste, workforce, and framework adherence.

  • SEC no-action correspondenceUS

    Exclusion requests and their dispositions.

  • N-PX filingsUS

    Investor-level voting records and rationales.

Reading the Data

Three conventions worth knowing.

Disclosure rate is reported separately

Environmental and social metrics carry a disclosure rate alongside the value, so a gap in reporting is never mistaken for a value of zero.

Termination terms are scenario-specific

Severance and equity treatment are captured separately for each of seven scenarios, so provisions compare like for like:

  • Change in control
  • Termination without cause
  • Voluntary termination
  • Termination with cause
  • Death
  • Disability
  • Retirement

Framework adherence is tracked, not assumed

We record which reporting frameworks a company states adherence to, and whether its disclosure carries external assurance.

  • GRI
  • SASB
  • TCFD
  • <IR> Framework
  • CDP
  • UN PRI
  • UN SDGs
